Xavier Medel, 19, of Bridgeport, was arrested and charged for his involvement in a Dec. 23, 2018,  burglary at a Sandhopper Trail address, said Westport Police Department Lt. Jillian Cabana.

"With the assistance of the community, patrol officers and detectives worked tirelessly over the holidays to link Medel to additional crimes committed in Westport," Cabana.

At the same time, investigators were also able to identify the two juvenile suspects.

Following the investigation, detectives determined the trio was responsible for multiple Westport crimes including six residential burglaries, 14 motor vehicle break-ins, two stolen cars, and numerous larcenies, Cabana said.

The crime spree targeted homes and vehicles on Sandhopper Trail, Crystal Circle, Gault Avenue, Oak Ridge Park, Keyser Road, Evergreen Avenue, Gorham Avenue, and Brooklawn Drive.

Investigators have since recovered an extensive amount of stolen property including two Audis, a Mercedes and a Chevrolet, computers, a bicycle and a purse.

"The Westport Police Detective Bureau continues to investigate these incidents, recover additional stolen property and coordinate with surrounding jurisdictions in which the trio are suspects in similar crimes," she said.

Additional arrest warrants are anticipated for Medel and arrests of the two juvenile suspects are forthcoming, she added.

In all of these cases, the homes and vehicles had been left unlocked.

"We continue to urge Westport residents to lock their homes, garages, and vehicles every night as well as removing valuables from their vehicles and turning on exterior lights and security systems," she said. "These simple steps, often overlooked, can help prevent residents from becoming victims of burglary and theft."

Medel is being held on $250,000 bond.
